Blog > VSP Vision > From Boots to Business: Continuing a Legacy of Service
I could have started seeing patients the day I left the military. After earning a scholarship to optometry school through the U.S. Army, I owed them four years of service—time I spent as Chief of Optometry at Fort Bragg. That experience solidified my commitment to return to Sandy, Oregon, and open a private practice. A few months before my return to civilian life, my wife, Kim, took the reins—coordinating contractors, managing the build-out, and ensuring everything was ready when I came home.
Why Optometry? Kim is the reason I found my way into optometry. I started as a pre-med major, but when she began working for an optometrist, she saw how well the profession fit my personality. Instead of becoming a third-generation paver in my family’s asphalt business, I chose a career that aligned with my strengths and long-term goals. Optometry offered the perfect blend of entrepreneurship and service—a business model that fit our family and values.
Launching Cold and Growing Fast We launched cold about 11 years ago, and I loved providing high-quality eye care to friends and neighbors. Over time, we grew to three practices, but growth brought challenges. I was stretched thin, unable to take time off, and patients were waiting six to seven weeks for appointments. That’s when VSP’s recruitment support helped us find a fantastic associate. With their help, we extended care to more patients, especially in our rural community where access was limited.
Partnering for Progress: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow From day one, VSP has been a vital partner. We couldn’t have launched cold without their network of members—joining early was one of the smartest moves we made. Their programs help expand our scope of care, retain patients, and increase revenue. Premier Edge and PECAA have been game-changers, offering resources that strengthen our practice and independent optometry as a whole.
One of the most meaningful aspects of our relationship with VSP is their commitment to the future of optometry. As a mentor in their Future Leaders Academy, I’ve seen firsthand how they invest in early-career ODs, equipping them to lead and shape the profession. Their dedication reflects a long-term vision backed by 70 years of innovation and leadership in eye care. Partnering with VSP isn’t just valuable now—it’s a strategic advantage for the future.
Legacy and What Matters Most As Eye See It, one of the things I’m most proud of is that our practice continues to deliver exceptional care—even when I’m not there. Thanks to our growth and the support we've received, we're now able to serve more patients than I ever imagined possible.
When it comes to the legacy I want to leave, my focus is on being present for my wife and our two kids, who are now 16 and 14. I believe that by showing up every day—for my family, my team, and my patients—the legacy will take care of itself.
