As optometrists, we’re often the first point of contact when someone notices that something “just isn’t right.” Sometimes it’s a simple refractive change. Other times, it’s a reminder of how deeply connected our eyes are to the rest of our bodies.
One of my favorite patient stories is one I’m reminded of every day.
A woman in her early thirties came into my office, eight weeks pregnant and understandably worried. She told me she was seeing a cloud in her vision—like there was a spot she just couldn’t see through. Any vision change can be frightening, but especially during pregnancy.
I dilated her eyes and took a retinal photo. Almost immediately, I saw the cause: a clot in one of the blood vessels in her eye.
I referred her to a retinal specialist right away, who then sent her to her primary physician for further evaluation. After additional testing, her medical team discovered the underlying issue—a hole in her heart that had gone undetected her entire life.
That clot in her eye was the first clue.
Since I live and work in this neighborhood, I see this patient often, usually with her little girl skipping happily beside her. Another neighbor still comes in and says, “You saved my best friend’s life—and her daughter’s.” Every time, I’m reminded exactly why I love what I do, and it makes me incredibly proud—not just of that moment, but of the role optometrists play every day in whole-body health. As Eye See It, we don’t just correct vision; we detect systemic diseases, catch silent threats, and often uncover the first signs of conditions that could otherwise go unnoticed.
